Home to over 165,000 people, Eugene is Oregon’s third largest city. Ideally situated at the southern end of the fertile Willamette Valley, the City covers approximately 41.5 square miles.

The City of Eugene is a home rule city operating under a council‐manager form of government. The City Council has a Mayor and eight Council members. The Eugene Police Department employees about 190 sworn officers and 140 employees who provide a variety of police services with an operational budget of over 50 million.

The ideal candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police science, public administration, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and must have 10 years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience, with three years of experience as full-time lieutenant or higher, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. A master’s degree or FBI National Academy training is highly desirable. The candidate must possess or be able to obtain, a valid Oregon driver’s license.

If selected, the candidate must be licensed or eligible to work as a peace officer in the State of Oregon within 12 months of appointment. Additionally, the selected applicant must possess an Executive Certificate from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) within 12 months of appointment.
