Hidden from the big city hustle and bustle, Baytown is one of the Texas Gulf Coast’s best-kept secrets. With a population of approximately 82,000, it is the third largest city in the Houston metropolitan area and is located about 30 miles from downtown Houston.

The City of Baytown is a home rule city operating under a council-manager form of government. The Baytown City Council is comprised of a Mayor and six City Council members. Baytown has 1,100 full-time and seasonal employees and an annual FY 2017 budget of $178 million. The Baytown Fire Department provides fire protection, advanced life support and medical first responder services, and other specialized hazardous materials and rescue services to over 82,000 citizens from seven strategically located fire stations, with service coverage area of over 36 square miles.

The next Fire Chief who will answer directly to the City Manager, must have exceptional negotiating skills and a thorough knowledge of fire suppression, inspection, and Community Rick Reduction procedures are required.

The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, and must have 10 years of progressive management experience, including five (5) years at a Battalion Chief level or above to include administration/management experience. The candidate must have served as a paid firefighter in a municipal department providing fire and EMS services and must be eligible for and obtain basic certification under Fire Fighter’s Certification from the Texas Commission of Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education and Texas Emergency Medical Technician Certification within 12 months. A valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record is required. A master’s degree, experience with State Civil Service or Collective Bargaining, and knowledge or skills working with fire protection issues in an industrial area are preferred qualifications.
